EcoScribe — Local Voice-to-Text App for Mac | No Cloud, No Subscription
EcoScribe is a privacy-first voice dictation engine built exclusively for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Unlike cloud-based speech recognition tools, EcoScribe runs its AI models entirely on-device using Apple's Neural Engine, meaning audio is processed locally and never transmitted to any external server.
The app integrates with every text field across the macOS environment — including Mail, Slack, Linear, Xcode, and Terminal — through a global hotkey shortcut (Control + Space). Users simply hold the key, speak, then release, and the transcription appears instantly at the cursor position with an end-to-end latency of approximately 18 milliseconds and a word error rate of just 1.4%.
Key features include smart rewrite to clean up filler words, custom vocabulary support for technical jargon and proper names, four context-sensitive dictation modes (Email, Code Comment, Standup, and Journal), and a fully encrypted local transcript library with full-text search. All recorded history is stored on-device using AES-256 encryption and is never synced to the cloud.
EcoScribe is available in two tiers: a free Classic plan with unlimited local dictation and no account required, and a Pro plan at a one-time payment of $29, which unlocks the Metal GPU engine, Whisper base.en model, unlimited custom vocabulary, and priority support. An Enterprise plan with custom pricing is available for teams requiring multi-workstation deployment and centralized license management. A Windows version is planned for Q4 2026.
